"Exposure on the Mirror"

For interested audiences, we present one of the earliest series created by South Korean Fine Arts Photographer Yeong Ja Jung, titled "Exposure on the Mirror." The artist began this project in 1980 and the pieces are in C-Print (1981).

Photography during the late 70s was about capturing and documenting a single moment in life. By using the mirrors to reflect the environment behind the camera, Yeong Ja Jung brought to the audience a unique scene that was never present in the history of photographic arts.

Within each of these unique and dynamic pieces, Jung presents a world reflected within mirrors that differs entirely from that of the surrounding world. She introduces a fascinating philosophical concept wherein a slice of life is taken from the environment behind the camera. Staying faithful to her ontology, Jung reflects the purity and the essence of truth that cannot be found in ordinary photography. Using vibrant colours radiated by the natural world, Jung focuses on the reflection of nature and brings justice to a beauty that is very often overlooked.

Her observations are articulated through the fragmentation of the human body, limiting their role within the world that she creates through abstract shapes and spaces. Contrary to most photographers at the time, Jung takes the focal point away from people and places it on the interaction between humans and nature. This serves as an interesting contrast with Joan Jonas, a "Body Art, Performance, and Video [Artist]" (Guggenheim Museum), who also used mirrors as props for her work, but placed focus on surrealistic distortions of the human body.

Guggenheim's recent acquisition and recognition of Joan Jonas' "Mirror Piece I" in 1991 puts Jung on par with exceptionally important and influential artists of the late 20th and early 21st century. Posted below are samples of Jung's pieces (art critiques are welcomed):
